Treasure Island, a manmade landmass in the San Francisco Bay, has carried many identities: world’s fairground, naval station, radiological training site, and housing for low-income residents. Today, it is once again in transition, as redevelopment reshapes its landscape and community.
I began photographing the island in 2018, drawn to its dissonance and uneasy beauty. These photographs reflect not only the island’s state of in-betweenness, but also the wider socioeconomics of the Bay Area and my own sense of standing at a crossroads.
The Middle Distance lingers in the space between here and there, between future and past, where the horizon is always visible, yet stubbornly out of reach. While the ache of distance persists, moments of connection and solidarity surface amid the uncertainty.
